I have learned more about the art of selling over the past 20 years by studying psychology, behavioral science, relationships and communication than I learned from any sales book I have in my library.

One of those great influential thinkers and the founder of analytical psychology was Carl Jung. Many personality type assessments used today - including the Myers-Briggs assessment - are inspired and based on Jung’s work.

According to Jung, we all have this persona, a "MASK" or image we present to the world. This mask is designed to make a particular impression on others, while concealing our true nature…

How does this apply to sales?

Do you ever feel when you’re meeting with a potential client or making a call that you are really just pretending to be nice?

Do you ever feel that when you are interacting with a prospect you are talking and behaving differently than when you’re talking to one of your friends or business colleagues?

Stop pretending, because sometimes ….

Being NICE is Being Ignorant!

Just recall the last time you received a call from a complete stranger – like a telemarketer –
and he or she said:

“Hi, (your name), how are you today…?

Sounds nice, doesn't’ it?  Genuine? … Not so much …

What was your first gut reaction? … Did you feel any kind of resistance? 

Did you feel that the person who called you had an agenda for the call?

Remember the last time you were interested in a certain product or service and after the initial conversation, the sales person called you up and said:

”Hi, I’m just calling you up to follow up …”

Unless you were ready to buy, you would probably have felt some hidden pressure, did you not?

Chances are you have been using this kind of “sales language” for a long time without realizing how many sales opportunities you might have lost because of it.

It's interesting that most of us take it for granted that spontaneous and natural language is the right way to communicate and relate to our friends, spouses, relatives, and other people in our personal lives; yet, when it comes to sales, our language becomes scripted and sometimes even sounds unnatural.

“Outdated And Watered Down
Selling Techniques!”


Think about it like this.  Wouldn’t it make sense that sales gurus would want to sell their books – so naturally they put out the most general tactics in their books. Things that will apply to the broadest amount of people possible.

Naturally things get watered down... and as consumers get more and more immune to selling techniques, it all comes down to the basics.

If you’ve ever read the “The Tipping Point” by Malcolm Gladwell, you already know that small things can spark a huge change.

Small changes in the way you go about your business, from identifying your ideal customer to the way you communicate with your clients can have a compounding effect on your results and success.

Making just small changes can create gigantic results.

Sales Coaching Tip #1: "Customers are real people."

I always tell my coaching clients that they need to sell like they were talking to a friend over a cup of coffee. Keep your conversations human by always viewing your prospects as people who have potential problems that you might solve.

Too many sales professionals still operate from the assumption that the people they talk to NEED their product or service.

They get so absorbed with pushing all the benefits, advantages and features of their product or service without a true understanding of the problems and emotional needs their potential clients are experiencing.

Instead, do your homework and identify certain problems that your potential client may be experiencing and make these the focus of your conversation.

Start asking yourself ...

What are some of the problems MY potential customers are experiencing today?

Sales Coaching Tip #2: "Never assume the sale!"


Never assume that the person you’re talking to needs what you have to offer.

I understand that this way of thinking is perhaps counter-intuitive to what you might have been told for all these years, ... “Always assume the sale!”

In today’s world, where your customer is better informed and more educated than ever before, the traditional sales mindset and the old sales techniques that were once successful have completely lost their effectiveness.


Sales Coaching Tip #3: "Start solving REAL problems."


Start solving REAL problems by offering REAL solutions, not benefits.
If you’re not solving a problem for your client, you probably have no business being in your business.

Instead of selling people on the benefits, focus your message on how you can start solving problems.

Start thinking about how you can start helping people.


Sales Coaching Tip #4: "Start thinking like a customer."


Get out of your own way and start thinking like a customer.

  • What are some of the fears and frustrations that your potential customer is experiencing as it relates to your product or service?
  • What are some of the stories they are telling themselves? 
  • What is the kind of experience you would like to have if you were a potential customer interested in your product or service? 
  • What are some of the emotions you would be experiencing?
